| info | For it's climactic third act DAS LEUCHTEN required a detailed 3d model of a unique flying vehicle - the K-17. The vehicle is designed by the mysterious GNOSIS corporation to serve a double purpose: pretending to defend the city from attacks, it's true purpose is to release billows of thick fog into the air and mask what really is going on: The guardians themselves fake the enemy's alleged missile attacks! We knew early on that this vehicle would play a prominent role in the film's plot. First seen in serveral shots in the background it would later be very important in revealing the conspiracy. It was crucial that the audience would have a chance to understand the dual role of the helicopter at the same time our hero Alex realized what was going on. |

| design | The inspiration for the design came from two sources: The GNOSIS corporate logo was the basis for the overall shape seen from above or below. The main inspiration for the overall look and feel of the K-17 came from the US Marines V-22 Osprey helicopter, which also has two main rotors attached on outward wings. The director wanted the K-17 to feel very heavy whilst being both magnificent to watch and menacingly looking. Like a bird of prey clawing itself into the sky it should loom above the people like a giant damocles sword. With the basic design guidelines in place Felix Mertikat designed the K-17 in intricate detail on paper. This version was adjusted slightly to fit the somewhat realistic approach our sci-fi universe should have and was then used by me to build the final 3d model in Maya. For texturing, photographs of a real U.S. Navy Chinook and other helicopters were used. Final shots with the K-17 were rendered using Maya, Mental Ray and HDR lighting. |
