The live-action shoot for MOTHERLAND took 3 days. Each day approximately 15 setups were shot.
Filmakademie's STUDIO2 facility was used as the shooting stage, primarily because of its 270° degree greenscreen and ceiling height to accommodate the camera crane. Another plus was the possibility to have very low shot angles by having "ground level" being built on platforms.
Set building was limited to shots where ground contact or character interaction required a physical prop. Sets being built included modular plaza tiles, a small rubble pile, a factory table, a piece of barb wired fence and small part of the stairs the girl walks up to confront the tyrant in his palace.
To achieve the propaganda poster aesthetic of being "frozen in time", MOTHERLAND was shot in HD, using 50fps as a base framerate. All shots were recorded using a clip recorder connected to the camera.
